TK-5th Grade

Schedule

Judaica Curriculum

Students discover what it means to be part of the Jewish culture and tradition. In each grade, students interact with parts of Torah, Jewish rituals and lifecycle moments, and Jewish holidays. The learning will take students all over the building and beyond, including:

  • T’fillah with clergy and our song leader

  • Music with our song leader

  • Art and other creative projects based on the learning

  • Israeli Dance and Krav Maga (All TK-2nd Graders and by Elective for 3rd-5th Grade)

  • Chugim (Electives for 3rd-5th Graders)

  • Weekend Retreat (4th and 5th Graders)

Hebrew Through Movement

As linguist Lisa Schachter explains, “reading begins in, and is based on, oral sounds;” therefore, we should teach Hebrew in a sound-to-print sequence - starting by teaching children Hebrew orally and later adding the print/visual component. Students learn Hebrew by hearing and responding to Hebrew commands through physical movements. It is a fun, social, and great way for our students to learn a large vocabulary of Hebrew. The TK-3rd Graders will have HTM on Sundays, while 4th and 5th graders will have it integrated into their Hebrew program on Tuesdays.

Hebrew Language Instruction (4th-5th Grade)

4th and 5th graders learn the Hebrew letters, how to decode Hebrew, and apply their Hebrew skills to blessings and prayers that they will lead at their B-Mitzvah. The blessings and prayers they learn include the following: Shabbat Candles, Short Kiddush, Hamotzi, Tallit Blessing, Shehecheyanu, Bar’chu, Sh’ma, V’ahavta, Mi Chamocha, Long Kiddush, Avot V’Imahot, G’vurot, Torah Blessings, and Haftarah Blessings.
